Fairness, Consistency, and Dignity: What Residents Should Expect from Their Municipal Judge

Most Henderson residents will never need to set foot in a federal courthouse. They’ll never follow a high-profile trial or worry about complex appellate law. But many of them, at some point in their lives, will walk through the doors of Henderson Municipal Court. Maybe it’s a traffic ticket. Maybe it’s a misdemeanor charge. Maybe it’s a neighbor dispute or an ordinance violation. Whatever the reason, that visit to Municipal Court will likely be their most direct, personal experience with the justice system. And when that moment comes, they deserve a judge who is ready.

The Three Pillars of a Well-Run Municipal Court

1.     Fairness: The Law Applies to Everyone Equally

Fairness sounds simple. In practice, it requires constant vigilance.

Fairness in a Municipal Court setting means that the outcome of your case is driven by the facts and the law – not by who you know, how you look, what you can afford, or whether you showed up with an attorney. It means that a first-time offender is treated with the same respect as someone the judge has seen before. It means that personal feelings, political affiliations, and outside pressures have no place in a judicial decision.

I have spent over 30 years practicing law in Nevada – representing clients in criminal defense, personal injury, and civil matters. I have stood on both sides of the courtroom, and I understand what fairness looks like in practice, not just in theory. I have also served as Judge Pro Tem in both Henderson and Las Vegas, giving me firsthand experience presiding over cases and making judicial decisions that affect real people’s lives. That experience informs my judicial philosophy: the law is not a tool to be wielded selectively. It is a framework that protects everyone, and it must be applied that way.

2.     Consistency: Predictability Builds Trust

One of the most corrosive things that can happen in any court is inconsistency. When similar cases are handled differently based on factors that have nothing to do with the law, residents lose faith in the system. They begin to wonder: is justice something that applies to everyone, or just to some?

Consistency in Municipal Court means:

-              Similar violations carry similar consequences – residents can understand what to expect

-              Procedures are applied uniformly – no one gets a special process because of who they are

-              The same standards of respect and decorum apply in every case – whether the matter is minor or serious

-              Decisions are explained clearly – so residents understand not just what was decided, but why

Consistency isn’t about being rigid. A good judge knows that individual circumstances matter and that the law often allows for discretion. But that discretion should be applied thoughtfully and transparently, not arbitrarily. I believe that when Henderson residents see a consistent, principled court, they trust it. And when they trust it, the entire justice system works better for everyone.

3.     Dignity: Every Person Who Enters the Courtroom Deserves Respect

This one might seem obvious. But it matters more than people realize, especially in Municipal Court, where many of the people who appear before a judge are not attorneys. They are everyday Henderson residents who may be nervous, confused, or intimidated by the legal process.

A judge who treats people with dignity:

-              Listens before ruling – gives everyone the opportunity to be heard

-              Speaks clearly – avoids legal jargon that alienates people who aren’t lawyers

-              Remains patient – recognizes that for most people, a court appearance is not routine

-              Does not demean or dismiss – even when firmly applying the law

-              Acknowledges the human dimension of every case – because behind every case number is a real person

I have spent my entire career listening to clients, understanding their circumstances, and advocating on their behalf. I know what it feels like to sit across from someone who is scared about what happens next. That empathy, combined with legal expertise and judicial experience, is exactly what Henderson Municipal Court needs.

What This Looks Like in Practice

Fairness, consistency, and dignity are not abstract values. They show up in concrete, day-to-day decisions inside the courtroom:

•       A traffic case is handled efficiently and respectfully, with a clear explanation of the outcome and the resident’s options

•       A misdemeanor charge is evaluated on its facts, with appropriate weight given to individual circumstances within the bounds of the law

•       A first-time appearance is treated as an opportunity to help someone understand the system, not as an inconvenience

•       A repeat matter is handled consistently with how similar cases have been handled before

•       Every person, regardless of income, background, or legal representation, is addressed professionally and treated as someone whose case matters

These are the standards I will bring to Department 1 of Henderson Municipal Court.

Henderson Residents Deserve a Judge Who Is Ready

Municipal Court judges in Henderson handle a high volume of cases. The pace is demanding, and the decisions are real. Residents don’t need a judge who is learning on the job. They need someone who is ready – right now – to lead with fairness, consistency, and dignity.

·       I bring 30+ years of Nevada legal experience, Pro Tem judicial experience in both Henderson and Las Vegas, a deep understanding of the types of cases Municipal Court handles every day, and an unshakeable commitment to the community I have called home since 1967.

·       I am not running to build a political resume. I am running because Henderson’s Municipal Court matters, and because every resident who walks through those doors deserves a judge who treats them the way I would want to be treated: fairly, consistently, and with dignity.

If you believe Henderson’s Municipal Court should be led by an experienced, principled, and community-rooted judge, my name is Gary Thompson and I’m asking for your vote. The primary election is June 9, 2026. Early voting begins in late May.

Vote for Gary Thompson for Henderson Municipal Court Judge, Department 1 on June 9, 2026.
